you nutter!!!!

very good cause though, so here is the route i would take; the only way you can do it without boats........

pick your route east. the most direct would be across germany, poland and russia, then across siberia to that sticky-out bit on the top right. sorry i cant find the atlas but will edit it in later.

the sea known, i think, as the bering strait, separates siberia from alaska and is frozen solid in winter. you could therefore drive south from alaska, across canada maybe via vancouver and back into the usa through washington state / oregon, then down to california.

your first step might be to contact the russian embassy, to get some idea of whether or not they would let you do it.

whatever happens, i wish you the best of luck

ps could give you a really detailed route, but that would take a lot of the fun out of your planning

pps ref the comments of "engineer"; the vauxhall frontera is and always was an urban 4WD, mostly used for the school run, and should not be taken seriously. i used to drive a land rover 110 diesel and now have a citroën 2cv6, both of which are recommended in the 'sahara handbook'. whilst a fiesta may not be the best choice, it is a challenge. please note that someone successfully crossed the sahara in a ford capri, on the last england - dakar charity run. if you make adequate preparations (like stripping down and re-assembling a spare engine so you know how it works) and take more spares than you think you will need, there is no reason why you wouldn't make it.

Just reading the answer about driving through Alaska... It was done a few years ago by a group with Vauxhall Frontara's... many dropped out with problems due to the intense cold. I cant see it being a go'er in a 1300 fiesta really... I think you're going to have to look at a boat for part of it...... (or a "ford" snorkel)...

My thoughts are:
Plan A : Build the longest sea crossing bridge in the entire world!!!
Plan B : Drive on an underwater highway will also require construction.
How much you got to spend? you don't want to do this on the cheap
Then you can get sponsors to give the kids cash to spend on sweats or Toys etc. Makes you think, don't it.
