I am historian an I study Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance artists and you must not listen to some of the rubbish I've seen written.
Leonardo did NOT paint the Sisitine Chapel, that was Michelangelo and neither did he begin the Renaissance, he was a High Renaissance artist!!!
I have a lot of eperience with regard to Leonardo and I have handled some of his work personally.
He was a vegetarian but that did not stop him disecting humans and animals. He loved animals and was particularly fascinated with horses and probably had a small terrier dog. I've handled his very drawing of it! It's amazing for a rapid sketch.
He was always aware of where he came from, as he painted may scenes of Tuscany in the backgrounds of his works. Even so he travelled where the money and job prospects were best. His loyalty lay with advancement.
He disliked the thought of stealth or slyness as a way to ending human life but this did not stop him working for the infamous warlord and poisoner, Cesare Borgia. He and Cesare got on well as he loved Leonardo's arial city maps.
He was probably a homosexual and apparently was very handsome and dressed very well.
He was friends with Sandro Bottecelli but did not get on with Micelangelo.
He got bored quite easily I believe. He left many works unfinished maybe because the planning part to him was the most exciting. The painting was probably a bit of a bind. Drawing was of fundamental importance to the artist, both as a means of investigating and understanding the forms of nature and as an essential part of the preparatory process for paintings.
He was probably not very christian and belived experience was the master of all.
There are22 paintings that are attributed to or directly associated with Leonardo. Despite his enormous fame and influence as a painter, some of the artist’s works remain unfinished, while only half are generally agreed to be entirely the work of the master himself.
Leonardo's Mirror writing was probably a childhood habit never rectified rather than an attempt at coded messaging.
This is just a start. I can't really say too much more or I'll end up writing a book!
Leonardo had is good points and his bad as we all do. Some academics love him, others don't. He was famous in his own lifetime and he's even more famous now.
Take a look at this website if you're interested in the man and his work.

Hello,
I just arrived back from a beautiful trip to Italy and one of my touring stops was in the town of Vinci. I was able to view (just driving by) where Leonardo was born and then visit and walk through the castle Conti Guidi museum where Leornados sketches have either been copied or transformed into some life size model relative to what his magnificent brain had created. I had NO idea what this man had created and that his education had only come from his father. Some of the items were so complex and so beyond his time that I all I could do was sit and stare! In my opinion, his creations revolutioned and laid the foundation for many great inventors to open their own minds. Also, the Italians supposedly would give their bottom dollar just to get his body back from the French....very interesting!
In my opinion, I feel that maybe he was viewed negatively as people thought he was crazy and I also think that maybe he was not embraced as well because he was an openly gay man. Just my opinon though and I hope it helps!

He is an incredible artist who makes people think. If for no other reason, view Leonardo da Vinci positively because society needs more reasons to think. People need to stop trying to convince others of some great conspiracy. Take his work for what it is, art!

I wasn't aware Lenny was viewed negatively in any way today. In his time he was accused of heresy, vegetarianism and poor judgement in associates--all of which were likely true to some degree, but hardly reason to condemn him today.
If this is connected to Brown's book in any way (and many posters seem to think so), the Da Vinci code had NOTHING negative to say about Da Vinci at all, so if that was the thrust of your question you are heading down a dead end.
There is no public opinion about Da Vinci that needs to be changed.
note to jaghoppasigin: ignorance, zealotry and illiteracy are a depressing if unintentionally amusing combination. Thanks for making me laugh, while at the same time shaking my head.

The only thing positive that could come about that awful fictional book, a desecration of what is Holly, and invention of what did not happen and what is against God, is that if we CHRISTIANS are perceptive that it is totally wrong and full of errors and blasfemes
We are transferring the right message by bringing out the truth and accusing it publicly as the worst attack to Christianity.
SO ON A POSITIVE TONE, IF ALL CHRISTIANS UNITE AND EVEN THE VATICAN HAS SPOKEN UP FOR CATHOLICS TOO, WE HAVE SHOWN THAT DAN BROWN IS A COMPLETE SINFUL BLASFEMER WHO IS BEHIND BRINGING DOWN CHRISTIANITY.
And if we are aware of it, and it has been publicized that DAN BROWN'S BLASFEMING NOVEL "THE DAVINCI CODE" IS NOTHING BUT THAT A BLASFEME AGAINST GOD AND CHRISTIANS that we gain from.
THE FIRM STAND TO ERRADICATE EVIL EVEN IN REFUTING THIS HORRIBLE CONCOCTION OF LIES.
I WOULD SAY the only way to view it positively is that WE ARE SEEING CHRISTIANITY AND GOD'S CHURCH AT WORK SPEAKING TOTALLY AGAINST IT.
WE STILL HAVE GOOD LEFT IN THE WORLD TO FIGHT BACK EVIL AND EVIL AUTHORS.

Leonardo, aside from being a celebrated artist, was a visionary in many fields. He designed inventions centuries ahead of their time. And despite Dan Brown's book, Leonardo is one of the most significant personages of his, or any age.

Leonardo lived years before his time and spent his days working on issues related to the good of humanity. He was not a warrior. He was not greedy. And he did not kill people. He has always been honored based on his contribution to society and the arts.

Anyone who doesn't view Leonardo positively is ignorant, or a fool, or worse. He was one of the most brilliant, creative, prolific people that ever lived. I wish there were more people like him.
