People used to save up for a car, a nice vacation or for a rainy day. Now it seems everyone wants everything instantly and are willing to go into debt in order to get it.

People are getting more materialistic.

That's been a big cultural shift in the last 50 years or so. The United States has one of the worst savings rates per capita of any country in the world. Credit is very easy to obtain and therefore to abuse. People who lived through the Depression certainly weren't careless with their money because they saw how bad things to could be. It will probably take another recession with mass unemployment to wake people up to the benefits of being thrifty and plan for the future.

Yes, We have a savings account set aside just for Our sons College. He is 10 yrs Old now, but hopefully by the time he is ready for College we'll be able to send him.

I wish to save, but rent, bills, etc., leaves barely enough for groceries.
