Recently watched, "What the Bleep do We Know", and it really left me wondering. This question is based on the scenario given in the film where it is described that the Carribean Indians were not able to actually see ships arriving because they had never seen them or conceived of them before.

That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

And that says a LOT.

That's a pretty extreme example of that phenomenon. You can experience it on a lesser scale with this experiment. First, close your eyes and think the word "blue". Then open your eyes. You'll probably start noticing everything that is blue in your room. Now close your eyes and think of the word "red". Now when you open your eyes, you'll notice all the red things in your room. You might even see something that has red that you never noticed before. Now, that thing was in the room all the time you were doing this exercise, but you couldn't see it because you were thinking "blue".

You cannot see the air around you (because it's colorless). Does that mean it doesn't exist? That we cannot conceive of the notion that air is still filling our lungs?

Oh no, I hope not. Or I don't know how we are surviving without breathing!
