The fan's job is to cool the computer. It doesn't have much to do with how much work you're doing on it. Sometimes the fan is just working harder because the computer has been on a long time.

The fan spins faster when the processor (CPU) gets hotter. Doing a lot of processor-intensive work will make the CPU hotter, but it can also get hot if the ambient temperature is high or the airflow through the case is obstructed.

Generally a faster fan is also a noisier fan, but noise can also go up markedly if the fan bearings are on the way out. Fans are cheap so if in doubt, get a new one. A dead fan may mean a dead CPU very quickly.

The fan goes on as needed to cool the case interior. The heat buildup can be caused by circuitry use - the cd running at the same time as the network card at the same time as the hard drive is being accessed, etc... But is many times caused by poor positioning of the computer - is it near a heat vent, pushed up against a wall, in direct sun? It should never be in direct sunlight, and you should have at least 2 inches of air flow to the front and back of the unit.

Less often, the fan itself is starting to fail or is so dirty it is no longer effective.

It sounds like you are overheating your motherboard, most likely the CPU. I suggest you download and install Lavalys's Everest Home Edition (http://www.lavalys.com/). Everest will tell you the temperature of the motherboard, CPU and power. Try to keep the temperatures below 60 C.

If the temperature is above 60 C then you need to find a better cooling system. You can also try cleaning the interior of the computer to see if that solves the heating problem. If you are overclocking your CPU then you should take it down a notch.

Two other useful utilities include:

1. Motherboard Monitor (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311) and

2. SpeenFan (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=337)

No. When your computer is working hard it generates more heat. This triggers the cooling system to turn up the fan or fans. If the comuter were going to overheat it would shutdown. This won't happen unless there is some fault.

Work it as hard as you like. That's why you got it.

You answered your question. The fan speed increases when CPU's temperature rises. So its normal. Let the fan cool pc. Hope this info cool you too :)
