Either 1280x1024 or 1440x900 are good resolutions. Your monitor will display almost any resolution but it's recommended resolution is the only one that matters. Either will look good as long as you pick the one recommended for your monitor.

1280x1024 is a much more common recommended resolution.

What is more important is that you use a DVI connection (white) vs VGA (blue). This gives you the clearest, uncompressed digital video currently availible. VGA is analog so it is not as clear. If you have it on the back of your computer (usually the case if you have a grahpics card), you'll be good to go. Otherwise, VGA should do the trick.

A good cheapie under $300? Sure, I recommend this one:

You can go cheaper but not much better. This one has value, a response time of 5ms (great for movies and gaming- no ghosting. I notice some at 8ms but none at 5ms, which is why I didn't recommend the one at buy.com), good brightness and is well reviewed. Reputable brand and rebate seal the deal.

Hope this helps!

Well, 1440 x 900 is widescreen resolution. Like you would get on a 16:9 TV. 1280 x 1024 is normal resolution for a LCD monitor but you have to use the native resolution of your monitor. So it's not like you can switch out resolutions on the monitor you buy. 1440 x 900 is good for watching movies but NOT good for playing games. If you want to play games then go with a 1280 x 1024. Here's a 19" Widescreen Viewsonic for $197 after rebates, http://www.buy.com/prod/Viewsonic_19_Widescreen_LCD_8M_Video_Respose_Integrated_VGA_Speakers/q/loc/17151/202066865.html

I use 1280X960 and it looks great. When you say a good cheap one out there, I assume you mean monitor. I have found the best prices on either www.zipzoomfly.com or www.tigerdirect.com.

The "optimum" resolution is defined by the manufacturer and varries according to the make and model.

if this is a driving force situation then move to Control Panel > Devices/Device supervisor, uncover your Display driving force, proper-click on > Properties, click on the "driving force" tab after which "replace." you may also must go surfing and uncover the detailed driving force in your card and manually set up nonetheless.
