i've seen a lot of responses that say it's because so smaller states have a say. what nonsense!!
we have the "college" because our democracy is a farce. a popular vote means whoever receives the most votes wins. we, the american people aren't trusted to vote in a president. it is decided by our "betters". a popular vote is the only way a true democracy can function. that's why our's is broken. and needs fixing badly.

It really is very reasonable. Yes, there is the idea of popular vote but look at how the population is spread. The electoral college ensures that lesser populated areas like Wyo. get the same representation as a state like Ca. It isn't a perfect system but it does work and helps ensures the basic constitutional right of equal representation of the people.

we use it so that a small group of over populated states do not have complete control of who is elected president. If we only use the popular vote our pres would be decided by just a hand full of states while the small states have no say. although many people say that the 2000 election was bogus. it was a great example on how the electoral college gave every state a say in who is pres.

The Gov't thought letting presidents being elected by the popular vote, would give too much power to the people. Now, I dont know why they don't change it.
