A monotheistic religion is a religion that believes in one, and only one, god. Monotheism is opposite of polytheism, which is the belief in many gods.

The classic example for monotheism would be the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church believe in one, and only one, God. They even say it every Sunday at church during the "Apostle's Creed.":
"I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth...."
Other examples of monotheistic relgions are Judaism and Hunduism.

An example of polytheism would be the beliefs of the ancient Greeks who believed in many gods... Zeus, Poseiden, Hades, Apollo, etc.

I hope I was able to help answer your question :).

I guess you know by know that it means worship of one god.

However, a couple of minor corrections.

Hinduism is not strictly a monotheistic religion, since a single God is not worshipped to the exclusion of all others (Brahma is not a God but a concept. There are still separate Gods, Ganesha, Vishnu, Shiva, Kali, etc)

And Buddhism is best described as an Atheist religion--there is no supreme God to be worshipped at all
