A lot of this depends on details you've left out of your question: dorm or commute? particular major? is cost a factor?

For NYC, one of your best choices for a non-dorm school is Queens College of the City University of New York. Great, prestigious faculty in a wide variety of departments (for example, English, BioChemistry, Elementary and Secondary Education, Political Science, Psychology) and one of the most inexpensive schools around!

For a dorm-school on LI, SUNY StonyBrook has a lot to offer. Good variety of active departments and a connection to a University Hospital for research programs. Close enough to NYC (Long Island RailRoad right outside campus) for ubran adventure, and right near Port Jefferson and Smithtown/Smithhaven Mall for more "long island" life.

If you're looking for a college in Manhattan, then you should really go to one that has a specific "calling" for you -- it has the major you want... it has connections to the industry you want to advance in... something that "grabs" you as an undergraduate. It might not be worth all the expense if you are still undecided. Graduate school might be where you focus on the Manhattan schools.

Hope this helps :)

1- Columbia University
2- New York University

The best colleges in Long Island are:-
1- Stony Brook University (better than most private colleges)
2- Hofstra University

It would depend on your intended Major, your high school GPA and your financial ability.

Most have pointed out the obvious of Columbia, NYU, and Stony Brook. If your looking for something a bit smaller, Concordia College in Bronxville is Great. My parents were well rested in the fact that it was a small christian college and I was a short train ride from NYC. I do have one warning about Concordia, the dorms are very chilly in the winter.
