If you're in a real pinch, you can try a "Poor Man's Copyright". (It may or may not hold up in court. Precedents have gone both ways, I believe.) You seal your script in an envelope and mail it to your own address. This will include a government issued date stamp and it will be evident that it hasn't been opened. This will prove you had a particular script at a particular time. ...I'd recommend the official copyrighting process, but it's another option.

You can do this at the US Copyright Office – see the last 2 links in the source box. The application is fairly simple & the cost is $30 per application (it will likely rise to $45 by July 1).
