It was my experience that there is nothing inexpensive in London for Americans. I have no idea about the neighborhoods.

There are so many hotels in London but what I can suggest is that the Victoria/Belgravia district of London is a very good place to stay. You can find some great deals on hotels and the location is excellent. As you will be close to Victoria station you can get anywhere in London very quick. You are also only walking distance from Buckingham Palace, Westminster and London Eye. You can get some great info at http://www.londonvacationguide.com

Good Luck

I just went to London in January. We stayed at the Thistle Marble Arch. The hotel was very affordable, we did a package deal through expedia.com. The hotel was worth what we paid, but who cares, we weren't there for that! The location was a great place to be, very close to the tube and easy to get everywhere from. The only downside is there was no nightlife any where close.

I get emails from www.visitlondon.com and it seems that carriage homes or hostiles are the best price. Only thing is that sometimes you may share room w/ other strangers. They also have a link for B&B's which are a little more BUT you don't have to worry about breakfast. Check out the web site, it's the best I've found.

I stayed at the Hilton on the Docks. No frills but nice. Took the tube from there to get around town.
