I know that -40 degrees celsius is = to -40 degrees fahrenheit. This can be proved by using the formula Y=5/9(x-32), with x being degrees in fahrenheit and y being celsius. My question is, without using the trial and error method, how would I discover that -40 degrees is where both are the same number. What is the formula I would use to find -40 with only knowing that I needed to find the number were the two different measurements are the same number?
