Recession is negative grow in the economy for several quarters. Depression is a huge shrinking in the economy. The last one was in the early 1930's and lasted about 10 years in the US and was world wide. Although other nations like Germany manage to have it for fewer years.
Now the US has been growing at strong pace for 3-5% grows. Unemployment has been low around 5%. Usually a strong activity try to create inflation as the demands for goods is higher. Some people call it overheating. These days the inflation is also affected by a high demand for oil and raw materials for emerging economical powers like China and India (one of the great benefits of having free trade, just kidding!).
Another effect of inflation is that the Federal Bank will increase the interest rate and the stock market goes down even if the Federal Bank just mention the intention of controlling inflation.
I think the reason you think we are in a depression is the way the media (mostly anti-republican) brings the news. It is really depressing. If a democrat were in office you will hear better news.

No, jobs up and other econ. indicators doing well, Fed fears that the value of dollar increase despite their efforts to de-value it, so using their illegal monopoly powers they are seeking to harm the economy to devalue the dollar. Remember, if the dollar doesn't continually lose value it might suddenly lose less value and that would be bad. Does anyone else think that the Fed members should give up their limos and go back to riding the short bus?
