You are safe in chat rooms as long as you never give out any personel information. No address, no telephone number, no real name.

Yes in a chat room I believe you are safe if you do not give personal information such as your real name, address, place of work etc.
When you meet someone off the internet you are taking a chance. My advice would be to talk to someone for a long time (I'm talking about a year at least) then when you get to know them better, have your first meeting in a public place and bring along a friend.
I have heard of three people that turned out to be just as nice in person as on the internet but again the girl did not meet them until she knew them years, thus not breaking the ground rules.
Of course there are not so nice people online, you have a chance of meeting people like this in a bar, so be careful always but do not be afraid to chat either, its a great way to meet people.

90% or better of the people in chat rooms are not who they claim to be. Most of the people in chat lie about who they are, where they are from, what they do, and most other things. Chat rooms are full of strangers, the only things you know about them are what they chat or post on their profiles. Sex fiends, child diddlers, criminals, drug addicts, con artists, identity thieves- they all regularly troll chat rooms, looking for victims. Thats the interesting thing about chat rooms. The anonymity allows chatters to be and act like whom ever they choose. A 40 year old white guy can pretend to be a 15 year old latina girl, a 21 year old college girl can pretend to be a 50 year old man. It's very hard to know if what chatters say about themselves is the truth or not. My advice, spend some serious time chatting to the person in the room, and in messenger. Dont tell them anything easily idetifiable about yourself, such as your full name, address, or place of work or school. If they get pushy or insist on knowing personal info about you, ask your self 'Why would they need to know this about me?" Get to REALLY know them before you agree to meet them in real life. When you do finally meet them for real, meet up the first few times in a public place- a popular restaraunt, the food court at the mall, or a coffee shop. While it is true alot of sick minded people hang out in chat rooms, there are also many good, decent people there too. I hear over and over about great friendships (and romances) that have developed after people first met in a chat room.

yes i do coz i don't give out any of my details. i know people lie. i'm not sure why people go in to chat room hoping to meet a long life partner. you wouldn't go into a bar blindfolded and talk to someone you couldn't see or knew nothing about. so why should it be diffrent online.

I wouldn't trust anyone in a chatroom. People often find it easier to lie when they are staring at a computer screen. This often leads to false identities being used.

Far too often we have 35-year-old balding men pretending to be 18 year-old sexy blonde girls. I don't have any evidence but I'm sure it happens. I mean, it would be so easy.
