From experience, any chain saw will work, but it WILL dull the chain considerably, so be prepared to have it re-sharpened when you're done. The older ties were soaked in creosote, which is itself pretty toxic as well. Just protect yourself with goggles, a mask and gloves. Be sure to clean up your mess afterwords as well. One more thing..if you get and splinters from these ties, you may be opening yourself up to blood poisoning...BE CAREFUL!!

No, anyone will be fine, just be prepared to buy a new chain or have it sharpened since there could be metal in the railroad ties if they're authentic. If not you shouldn't have any problem, either way you should be fine.

When it comes to chainsaws, you can't get any better than a Stihl. For most back yard warriors the Stihl Farm Boss is probably a good choice.

Ditto on the creosote and pressure treatment cautions, but also:
IF THEY ARE TRULY USED RR TIES, THEY CAN HAVE NAILS, BROKEN SPIKES, AND AN ASSORTMENT OF OTHER METAL OBJECTS THAT ARE DANGEROUS TO USE A CHAINSAW AROUND!!! BE CAREFUL!!

No any chainsaw will work but wear a mask those are pressure treated and are toxic

No, not really, but you'll have to really clean the bar and chain when you're done because of the creosote that will melt and adhere.
