They say that Asian people evolved the eye folds in response to the harsh conditions during the Ice Ages. Supposedly they lived in Mongolia. Wind and glare off the snow allegedly favored those individuals with the epicanthic fold. Of course there is no real evidence to support these stories. Additionally, some people outside of Asia sport the folds: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khoisan

During developement all human fetuses go through a phase when they have to folds, but Asians don't lose theirs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neotony#Neoteny_in_humans Interesting, huh?

Americans evolved round eyes because of the enviornment-it's warmer here. But in the stated contries, it's colder. Asian people have flatter faces and almond-shaped eyes because that's what is more suitable then a more 3-D face.

Random mutations in their genes which produced the appearance. These eye shape changes came with traits which helped those people survive whatever life threw at them, while people with other eye shapes (square? triangular?) may have become extinct due to not having those traits. Now we all live different types of lives, who knows what shape eyes may be in a few million years?

the environment most likely. I read that some Chinese people evolved to have double eyelids as a way of protection from the harsh winds.
