Agreed.

Without a venue to vent frustration in a high paced physical game like hockey, there would be more incidents of stick swinging and potentially more violent injuries.

Fighting is not really 'allowed' but tolerated and penaltized.

The reason hockey does not eject its participants for fighting because it is the only contact sport where all the players are carrying potential weapons. Hockey knows that if fighting was not allowed in the NHL then some of the players may take out the aggression with their sticks and not their fists... Fighting actually prevents the McSorely incidents from happening.. For those of you who dont know.. McSorley swong his stick across the head of Donald Brashear. The fighting allows the players to get their aggression out in a safer manner. PLus as stated above.. . its a hell of a way to get the fans on their feet... especially in Philly...

Fighting in ice hockey is a controversial aspect of hockey. The practice of fighting in hockey is condoned in the National Hockey League, the junior leagues, and other professional minor leagues, but is punishable by ejection in the Peewee, College and European leagues. It is also not allowed in women's hockey at any level. Although it results in a major penality, players who engage in fighting (except for instigating) do not get ejected from the game. Hockey, along with lacrosse, remains the only major professional sport in North America to not eject players for fighting. Fights often are spontaneous, as a knee-jerk reaction to an on-ice incident during a game.

Hockey players will sometimes get a little frustrated and needs a way to vent that frustration. So that's why fighting is allowed in NHL.

Also, fans love fights. BTW.

Without the fighting, the NHL may not have as big a following as it currently does. It would loss it's popularity.

If a fight breaks out (like any sport) it is the referee's job to break it up. They still receive time in the box, but the ref is not going to get in the middle until somebody goes down!

It has nothing to do with ratings or fan attendance. It's just the way it has always been. Back when men played the game on frozen ponds and they resolved their conflicts by duking it out.

Because it's entertaining and keeps people watching it. Only die-hard hockey fans would stick around to watch it on TV and buy the tickets if they didn't get to see the occasional scuffle.

It's a very physical and aggressive game, sometimes tempers flare. Besides we fans love to see a good fight now and then!
