English should always be considered the US National Language. It doesn't even make sense to consider otherwise. It's obvious there is a lot of controversy regarding all the millions of immigrants from all over the world, specially those with hispanic descendancy, however, they were the ones who came to United States, an English speaking country, to try and make a better life and secure a better future than their homeland can provide, so it's only natural they have to learn English and adjust themselves with American society, it wouldn't make sense if thousands of Americans decided to invade China or Brazil as their new home, start demanding left and right immigrant rights, trying to change things for how they want it to be. It should definitely be mandatory for everyone wanting to live in US soil to learn, speak, read and understand English.

Adopting English as the National Language goes against what this country was originally founded on. However, since it is the primary language spoken in the U.S. it would make sense to do so. I was born in the U.S. but grew up mostly in Norway. I went to a Norwegian school, and was REQUIRED to take English classes starting in the 4th grade. Why?? because rest of the world speaks English. Remind you that Norway has a primary language. It should be mandatory for people seeking citizens ship to be able to pass a basic comprehensive English test, to go along with the immigration test that is required; but that should all be revised anyways. I bet any natural born citizen would fail it without studying. As far as being mandatory, I don't think it should be even if we adopt it. But then again, majority of the rest of the world require students to take English or Spanish, because BOTH are primary languages spoken through out the world. So if we adopt English, why not make Spanish mandatory?? Both are very though questions, they touch on a lot of different issues.

First learn how to spell "mandatory" and then get back to me.

Seriously though, it would help if everyone spoke English in the United States but how does that enrichen the culture through diversity? Perhaps Americans can have the opportunity to learn some new languages instead.

Yes we should, and when that happens, it should not be the governments responsibility to foot the bill for people to learn English.

Making law does not mean that people will surely obey it. You have to make them realize that we should all speak English.
