As an intelligent person you must realize that the US is only one of the many nations in America, all the people in America are and think of themselves as Americans. My question is Why do you as a United Statesian call yourself an American instead of a United Statesian?
Are you ashamed of being a United Statesian and attempt to hide that fact by calling yourself an American instead?

Among the answers several United Statesians seem to be under the impression that the name of the United States includes the word America, it does not. The United States never named itself, the words ‘The United States of America’ are a definition not a name. To better convey the concept I’ll paste below the explanation from an encyclopedia.
Thank you everybody for your comments

"United States" comes from the end of the Declaration of Independence, "WE, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Assembled...". The preamble to the U.S. Constitution reiterated the phrase: "We the People of the United States..." (The authors of these two documents probably used the phrase "united states" in place of a list of colonies/states because they remained uncertain at the time of drafting which colonies/states would sign off on the sentiments therein.) The geographic term "America" specifies the states' home on the American continent.

hear hear! I'm canadian and believe it is an intentional choice, so as to marginalize any other americans, we must be sub-categorized as if we north americans are less important. (also south, central, latin, african, etc, etc.)

United Statesian is not a word first of all. We are the United States of America, therefore we are Americans. People from Mexico are Mexicans, people from Canada are Canadians. So what are you talking about here?

Because that sounds stupid. A United Statesian. Why do some people call themselves European or Asian or African. We call ourselves Americans because we are Americans and we call ourselves US citizens. No one is really a United Statesian. All of us have ancestors from different countries that came here and settled. So we are Americans because we were born in the Americas. We are also US citizens because somewhere in all of our bloodlines someone settled here and never left.

Why do I call myself that? Because that's how the world identifies those of us who live here in the United States.
No, I am not ashamed of being a United Statesian. Sometimes, I am ashamed of OTHER United Statesians, but not myself, or my country, to be sure.
What if we changed, it, though...Maybe United Statesman? I don't mean to sound racist, but I think that sounds a little nicer than United Statesian (it just sounds a little too much like something from a Dr. Suess book). What about USian (sounds like you-eshan)? Or USAnian (sounds like you-ess-aynien)?

What is a United Statesian? Clever, however no such factor exists clever, aleck! We name ourselves Americans no longer due to the fact we feel that we're the one ones in "America" however due to the fact this is a shortened variant of United States of America. That's a mouthful so it used to be shortened to Americans decades in the past. The international now attaches the identify of Americans to U.S. residents. No have got to get your panties in a ruffle. It's no longer a few type of moderate. There are the continents of North America and South America and there are exclusive phrases to explain locations inside the ones continents equivalent to Central America. Why do have the sort of chip for your shoulder over the sort of mundane factor??? What makes a continent isn't determined through whomever desires to make it up. It is a systematic entity. Continents are shaped through plate tectonics. It is a systematic indisputable fact that America isn't one continent.

Yes, we live in the "Americas".
But we are the only country who has named ourselves "The United States of America". That is our official name. Many countries have official names. We don't say "The Federative Republic of Brazil". No, we just say Brazil.
Mexico is technically "The United Mexican States", but they call themselves Mexican. That is the name they choose for themselves.
The USA has chosen America! We are American.
Yes, someone from --- let's say --- Panama is technically American, but they won't say they're American, they will say they are Panamanian.
