Isn't it against the principles of what your forefathers fought for and created?

Whether or not these people are actually guilty is unimportant to me (although many are innocent, about this there is no doubt), it's the fact that the majority are yet to be charged after more than four years!!

One prisoner, an Australian named David Hicks, has been in solitary confinement for 4 1/2 years without charge. He was captured with Taliban troops in Afghanistan. When he does eventually face trial it will be in a military court where the autonomy of Judges is far from garanteed...

What do Americans think of this situation and why it has been allowed to happen?

P.S. Sni52... your very coherent and well-articulated answer is appreciated, but don't you mean Allah?

I wouldn't say that all Americans are condoning what's happening at Guantanamo. I am personally completely and totally appalled by it and agree with your assertion that it is against American principles! I am also appalled by the lack of outrage by the general public here. Unfortunately, the administration's propaganda machine is one of the best in history and many people believe what they're told; these men must be guilty if they were arrested.

I have no problem with someone being arrested and tried for a crime if there's evidence, but it is well known that many of those prisoners in Guantanamo were captured solely on the word of paid informants, or were just poor schmucks caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. The fact that very few have been tried is a crime in itself. Hopefully the American public will wake up to the policies that eventually hurt us more than help us.

These nice gentlemen incarcerated at Guantanamo are combatants, and this country is still at war with their comrades. During WWI, WWII, or any other war for that matter, were combatants held until the fighting was over and the treaties were signed, or were they released to return to the fight?

Captured combatants are held until hostilities have ended. The men captured fighting with the Taliban ARE combatants, even if they don't have uniforms!!

I am 100% for holding combatants until hostilities cease. Unfortunately our enemies aren't as compassionate, U.S. soldiers, marines, seamen, and airmen aren't held in prison camps, they are slaughtered. Which would you prefer?

It really sucks when the Bush Administration does something and the Bush loyalists support it, then the rest of the world thinks all Americans are for the action. Don't forget, about half of this country is sane.

We are doing it for fun and profit. Same as everything else we do.

Americans think the situation is shameful but will not do anything whatsoever to change it.

We won't change it because we all basically feel as if we have no power TO change it. What are we going to do, VOTE for another President in 2 years that will eventuall stop it? (Provided that vote isn't already bought and paid for.)

I think it is a good thing. Of course, I'd have no problem with just shooting them all too, as they were all supporting or participating in terrorist attacks and should be sent to whatever diety they worship and I hope they find out that they don't get all the virgins.

People who chose to war against the United States have no cause to complain that they are imprisoned when found bearing arms against this country.

Consider them lucky not to have been shot out of hand.

I think they need to be charged of something or let go. It is so far away from us that we don't need to think about it but if we put politicians votes on the line they might get to the bottom of it. Might.

we allow it to happen because we are sheeple. bush violates the us constitution because we let him. it's so sad.
like pogo said;
we have met the enemy, and it is us.
the bill of rights has been suspended. desecrated. we are no longer citizens - we are prisoners of a madman - much like germany was in the 1930's and 40's

I don't condone it, but I don't know what to do. No one cares about anything! and politicians are doing whatever they please. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the people there are guilty of nothing and are just political prisoners.
