Sometimes they even make an entire trilogy. Did we really need a Ocean's 13..Ocean's 12 was proof enough that George, Matt and Brad need to find work away from each other. Shrek 2 was awesome (better than the first), but it does not always work out that way for most movies. For example, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, Big Momma's House 2, The Fast and the Furious 2, Deuce Bigalow 2, etc. I'm concerned about Pirates of the Caribbean 2...I hope it does better than its counterparts. I just wish Hollywood would come up with original ideas instead of making sequels and ripping off perfectly good Japanese movies.

Hollywood simply does what they think will make money.
If a movie makes money, the very first thing the studio talks about is, "Sequel!" If they can get the cast back together (or at least some of them), if their focus tests show the public wants another movie, and if they can make it within a budget, it'll get made. Simple as that. While hardly any sequels do as well as the original movie (most exceptions are those that were planned as multi-film projects to begin with, like Star Wars, the Matrix, etc.), they almost always do nearly as well, and almost always make money. If everyone stopped going to see them, Hollywood would stop making them :)

1. Sequels are generally profitable to the film companies.
2. It's much easier to advertise Big Momma 2 than it is to generate new buzz about a movie created around an original idea.
3. It takes greater effort to write a new story than to regurgetate an old one.
4. And the greatest reason is that the American public will still buy movie tickets, DVDs, and rent videos of the sequels.

If the first one was a hit they probably figure people will pay to see the second one. Cuz apparentley not everyones caught on to the fact that sequels tend to suck. That and Some of us still have hope that there will be a good sequel. I did like saw 2. But the first was better... let see how bad saw three is when it comes out next year... lol

If movies make alot of money then they are sent out again for a second run. Money is the only logical anwser. But some may say just to piss people off. Look for Ocean's 14 soon and Fast and the Furious 3 friday.:)

I agree with Lunatic. They make a lot of money. People (generally) love sequels and remakes. It is sad but Hollywood has been doing this for a long time. There have been good sequels however. Look at Terminator 2, Toy Story 2 and Aliens for example.

because a sequel will bring in more money at the box office, because people have already seen the first one and want to see the second one, but the sequel never turns out as well as the first one because there is just no good continuance from a movie that had a good ending. the plot is also very pathetic. the occasional sequel turns out ok, but isn't quite as good as the first one. they show the best parts in the comercials, and thats bassically it. hope this helps.

People fear new things. With a sequel, people are already familiar with the characters, so they are more likely to go see it BASED ON THAT FACT ALONE, as opposed to actually thinking the movie contains a great story that will keep them entertained for 2 hours.

The reason why there are so many "horrible" sequels to films is because movie studios are trying to "cash-in" on a formula that has worked for them previously in order to generate sustaining funds for their projects. The case in point to this is Disney. All of the lackluster "sequels" to the classic animation films are only to provide sustaining funds for their bigger projects like "Cars". This is strictly my opinion.

I totally agree with you. Most sequels detract from the original, successful product. Of course it's about dollars; it worked before...

Besides money, it's like the Bible says, "There is nothing new under the sun." Hollywood has run out of ideas. We need to raise a new generation of creative thinkers and push them toward developing original works. :)
