A razor is better than the machine. You should NOT cut against the grain of your hair but with it. I remember hearing these tips for the guys at Queer Eye.
From my experiences and that of my closest friends, using Aveeno Shaving Cream is the best it really does prevent razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and other forms of skin irritation.

With a razor, electric or not.
I use a straight razor (Mach 3) and I first shave down the cheeks and neck, then I reapply shave cream and go up the face and neck. Use facial cream and just be careful.

i do it in a hot shower with a towel around my face first to open up the pores. then i put on shaving cream and wait a few minutes. first you shave alone the grain of the hair, then across it. you should a nice close shave like at the barbershop!
