Laptop computers are somewhat larger than notebooks and will accommodate a built-in disk drive unit and; optionally, a floppy drive unit. That is, a CD ROM drive is either built into the unit or the unit has a built-in bay that will accommodate a removable CD ROM drive.
Notebook computers will allow you to attach, via cable, a CD ROM drive. Since the drive is not built into the unit, notebooks are smaller and lighter than laptops. Hence, a notebook is an ultra small laptop. Another way to look at it is a notebook is about the size (or a little larger than) of a real [binder] notebook.
byderule: I am using the definition that was given when they originally distinguished between notebooks and laptops. They have their own origin. We didnt start calling laptops, notebooks, just to be cute.
Originally laptops were introduced as notebooks when the smaller version of laptops came out. Because of competition, notebooks have more features in them, but its origin was defined above.
Just like the original computer, the first laptop was HUGE. They were really fat and bulky. Then they started coming up with the term "notebooks" when laptops started getting smaller and thinner....just like a notebook.

It usually means the same thing but at the same time can be different. Depends on what the item is. For instance a pocket pc can be a notebook but not a laptop. It would fall under palm top. And laptop generaly is derived from having useres of portable computers placing them on their laps (and desktops on their desk during those days of the 286 and 386 machines) Remeber anything can be a laptop if its placed on the laps hence laptops only make sence if you add what is being placed on the lap. In this case laptop computer. Hope that helps!!

The difference is the notebook is a tablet PC that you can write on just like a tablet or sheet of paper and the laptop is a regular PC that you can only type information into.
You can also type information on to the tablet, but the cool thing is you can just write it out like you would with pen and paper and the PC converts it into type letters.
