A 5 gallon tank is kinda tiny and not many fish are suited for it and without a heater there are even less. If its gonna be in a room that will stay warm then a betta would be nice. Maybe 3 or 4 guppies or other small tropical fish but they would all have to be the same sex so they dont over populate the tank.
Dont get a goldfish, they can get really big (around a foot) and are too messy for a tank that small.

I have a 120 gallon tank with no heater and have no trouble at all. Tropical fish can usually adjust to a tank with no heater as long as the room is warm and it usually is for humans in the inter so it is for the fish in the aquarium. The problem with tropical fish isnt a heater verses no heater (I use to recommend heaters to all customers) but it is a "quick change of temperature that gets them". If you have a hater or the fish is in warm water and you immediately pull the heater or change the temp of the water too cool-THEN you will have problems. I have been without a heater for 6 years. But betas, goldfish (I dont recommend-they are dirty) tetras, zebra danios and guppies do well without a heater
I would suggest guppies in a 5 gallon tank because they have the most color and you can have more in there

All fish, even Goldfish should have a heater. I don't know what area of the country you live or how cold you run the Air Conditioner and how far away the tank is from it. The purpose of the heater is to control the downward temp. If you tank temp is swinging to far, it's very stressful on all fish, so a heater can keep it from dropping to low. Set it for 65%F for Goldfish and 70%F for tropical. Betas actually do better in the low 80s.

The only type of fish that don't require a heater would be goldfish, but a five gallon tank is WAY too small for goldfish. I would get a 25 watt heater and throw in a few male guppies or some zebra danios. Otherwise, you need to get a bigger aquarium.

Most fish need warmer water. Your in luck though, that five gallon tank will get pretty warm if it has a light on it. I have a five gallon with 3 female bettas, I originally put a heater on it but the heater was never on. The light was enough, sometimes in the summer it is too much. Get a sticky thermometer and monitor your water temp for a couple days I bet it's o.k for some danios or gouramis.
The most common fish that is coldwater is a goldfish- your tank is too small. They have to have ten gallons per fish. If you keep them in anything smaller you will kill them.

Do not get a goldfish!!! They get to big and are very messy. While alot of people say tropical fish dont need heaters, I have found they survive longer in water temp of 76-80 degrees.
I got my mom a 5 gal tank and in it is a betta who loves all the space and 2 african dwarf frogs. None of them require much care or heat. You could also try a couple of female bettas but they sometime dont get along.
I would stick with the male betta.

DO NOT GET A GOLDFISH. Depending on thr type, they require 50-100 gallons of water, each.
A five gallon tank is tiny, and as long as your house temperature is reasonable, you may not need a heater. But in a five gallon tank, I would only have one single betta, nothing else.
Many of the other fish reccomended to you (guppies, white clouds, etc) need to be in schools or five or more. You don't have room for that in a five gallon. A betta is the only solitary fish I can think of that will do well in such a tiny tank.

You can get any type of freshwater fish; they don't require any heaters. You can choose from the traditional goldfish to Mollys to guppies and tetras. Even Betas don't require heat. Just remember to not overfeed your fish. They will, and do, eat themselves to death. Don't change your water too often, maybe once a month, but only change out 2/3 of the water so as to not put your fish in schock. Have fun!

for small aquariums like the one you got a heater isn't necessary because of the small amount of water, if you have a hood with a light in it, then that would be you're heat source, it's only when you start getting to the bigger aquariums that a heater would be necessary because of the larger amount of water, my son has a ten gallon aquarium and no heater and I've put all kinds of fish in there and never had a problem. do not get gold fish of any type, you will regret it, because they are high maintenance fish.

If you only need one fish and have no other fish in there, my personal favorite is the Beta (aka Siamese Fighting Fish). They come in a wide variety of colors and even types if you know where to go (I love the royal crown Beta, the fins look like spikes). I think they even have personalities. :)
Your other option is a goldfish, but it would have to be a small one and they require two gallons for every inch of fish, as goldfish tend to be a "dirtier" kind of fish (more frequent water changes).
