they are the same building, yet walls put them apart, so they are apartments.

They are called apartments because an apartment is a self-contained housing unit that occupies only part of a building.
The definition in the dictionary is
Apartment: A room or suite of rooms designed as a residence and generally located in a building occupied by more than one household.
Hope that answers your question!

the entire building is the "together". If you all lived in every room of the entire building you'd be a commune. But you live in the units within the "together"-- apart from the whole off the building, therefore "apartment."

They are built together, but rented to many different people that create each little part of the building and they are a part from each other.......just another way for someone to make a lot of money off the renters!

I know what your getting at, why are they called a-part-ments when ironically they are together, but this is basically an etymology question. Where did the word come from? The French use 'appartement' and the Italians use 'appartimento' literally meaning "a separated place." 'Appartere' "to separate," from a "to" + 'parte' "side, place."

To say living in an apartment sounds much better than to say living in a compartment.

I believe the word origin (etymology) is from the French word "appartement" that means "private rooms for the use of one person within a house" or the Italian word appartimento, lit. "a separated place,"
