Train service does not connect them so you need to look at bus service. Most likely buses are Greyhound, Peter Pan, and Plymouth-Brockton lines might run service between the cities (you have to check on-line). If that does not work - you can easily take a train (AMTRAK) between Boston and Providence RI - then bus from to Newport from Providence.
