Sometimes it means swallowing your pride. If you do it enough, you have a greater sense of pride later, for the person that you have become.
One thing every young person needs to know is that some people are going to like you, some will hate you, and some just won't care one way or another.
But if going with your gut means going up against society, you'll gain respect either way. It's also a good way to open peoples' eyes.

I say screw social norms. Where does normalcy get you? It's easy to join the everyday rat race of society but at the end of the race, we're still all rats. Being true to yourself means you're not going to join the race just because everybody else is running. Our world has been full of great minds, great leaders, people who were true to themselves and didn't try to fit into the social norms of life. So stand up and be proud of who you are, leave "normal" to the boring people.

When do you have to be like everybody else. Why do you have to follow the crowd. Sure, you are going to stand out in a crowd, but to whom do you have to answer to in the long run.
Don't say that I am going to do that because everyone else is doing it. Truthfully they are not! They are saying it because they think that is what everyone expects them to say.
You have many choices to make in life. Just remember that with the choices that you make today, you have to live with the results tomorry.

You are the only person that is going to be with you for your entire life! Be true to yourself--as long as your true self isn't a murderer or other violent type.

Young people cannot "be true to themselves". They are too young and inexperienced to know who they are yet.

You just have to do what is true to you. If others don't like it, then they don't like you any ways so why be with them?

Find people who are like minded and share your views, you may have to look hard.
