Probably never. The U.S is the last major "super power" left in world. We have crowned ourselves economic, technological, militarily, politically, and morally Superior to the world at large. Our poop does not smell and we will continue to use the most illogical measurement system possible, as long as we control the all mighty buck! God bless America LOL.
I mean really would it be so hard to learn the new system. It make sense. Measurement increase in a uniform way! My god how brilliant, why didn't we think of it first. 1000 milligrams in a gram, 1000 grams in a kilogram, and so on and so on. Oh well look at our president, the metric system should be our last concerns at the moment.

I don't think America will go metric anytime in the near future, possibly even never. I believe this for three simple reasons.
1. Americans don't want to change, they've grown up on the US customary units system and that's what they want. They don't know how fast 40kph is but they do know what 40mph is. To quote a T.V. cartoon personality, "I get 40 rods to a furlong and that's the way I like it."
2. It would cost the government, corporations, and the American people a lot of money to convert to metric. Imagine having to throw away and replace millions of traffic signs with metric ones it would require making new ones, hiring people to take down the old ones and put up the new ones, and a having a way to dispose of the old ones.
3. And finally America has always stood out among other countries, and has always striven to have it's own distinct identity, and I believe having it's own system of measurement helps sets it apart from say England, you can say America is rebelling against the world's expectations.

THANK YOU! I work in Tourism in Costa Rica and I constantly have US Citizens asking me about measurements and weights, it doesn`t bother me to answer because I know both systems but just the same it makes it very hard for foreigners to get around in the US, likewise with US Citizens abroad.

the US was metric in the past then changed in the '70s, I think most people didnt understand it or maybe the US was "rebelling".

Probably not for a long time, if not never. Americans are too used to our system. It would cause confusion.

We tried it once in the late 70's or early 80's and it didn't work. So, to answer your question, NEVER.
