It is part of our body's natural defense mechanisms. In your nose there are mucus membranes that are excreting liquidy sticky mucus into your nasal pasages. As you inhale/exhale, the mucus is trapping microscopic particles, sort of like a filter, to prevent anything from entering your lungs. As more and more air passes through your nose the mucus dries out and forms a booger. The particles are trapped in the booger and your mucus has served it's purpose and is ready to be ejected form the body. And the cylce goes on.

Rhinoliths form when the mucus traps dust and other particles in the air. Mucus dries around the particle and hardens, somewhat like a pearl forming in an oyster. Since catching foreign particles is one of the main functions of nasal mucus, the presence of rhinoliths is a good indicator of a properly functioning nose (as opposed to a "runny nose", which can indicate illness).

A dry (most likely balled up) piece of mucus, combined with whatever dirt and hair is in your nose. Many young children seem to find this an appetizing combination.

It's dried out mucus that has flaked off the inside of the nostril and in an explosive rush landed in your handkerchief or tissue. Or in the case of small children the tips of their fingers. eeeeeeuuuuwwwww!
