Krakatoa.

Amazingly it was not the eruption that caused the deaths. It was after the explosion, that the outer walls gave in and the volcano was filled with water. When the volcano caved in the water rushed in and due to the properties of wave the inward rush reflected outward in the act of a giant tsunami. This Tsunami is what killed the settlers of Oceania.

Example: Fill you bathtub with water and take a bowl. Now push the bowl into the water (cavity up) until the water starts to flood the bowl very quickly. Now look at the resulting wave, now try to put the wave you saw to scale of a bowl about a half mile to a mile wide in the middle of the ocean. This is why geologists are scared of Krakatoa erupting again.
