Almost all wireless routers will work straight out the box without any input from the user. The wireless router will automatically get the IP address from the modem then will assign IP addresses to the PC's connected to the wireless router. Almost all ISP's have DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) which will assign an IP address to a modem when the modem connects to them. The first thing connected to the modem will then have that IP address. This could be your PC or a wireless router. If it's the router then it will assign it's own internal IP's to whatever is connected to it.
If you still can't get connected then do it like this;
TURN OFF EVERYTHING!! MODEM, PC AND ROUTER.
Connect modem to router.
Connect router to PC if you have a PC connected via Ethernet cable.
Turn on modem and wait until the lights show it's online, can take a minute or so.
Turn on router, should only take a few seconds to power up and connect with modem.
Turn on your PC or anything wireless.
This will transfer the connection from your ISP to your modem to your router and finally your PC. (Imagine a chain from your ISP to your PC, you're just connecting the links in the right order.)

two ways people forget that the wireless is part of your local loop and not your remote network or your ISP's network. You can obtain a network address two ways through the DHCP server in your local network but it must be on. If you further explain the kind of router you have or access point you are using i can help you with this further. Or alternativly you can manually create a IP address to the adapter that you are using this can be done in any platform windows, linux and mac os.

Very simply, you get an IP for a wireless connection from an Access Point.
How to convince the AP to lend it to you is a complete different matter...

If you are having difficulty, you have to call your ISP. Their tech support should help.
