Several reasons actually. First off, only first names are given, thus preserving some portion of anonymity. Secondly it is the rule and practice to not divulge information given in meetings, again preserving anonymity. Finally it is the rule and practice of most twelve step groups to avoid publicity, public disclosures, news stories, etc. in an effort to promote an atmosphere of trust and again, anonymity. One possible reason first names are given is so that the person has to acknowledge that they truly are a whatever program they are in. Hope that helps.

what is said in the meeting stays in the meeting.
It is more about privacy than anonymity.

the history of AA says that THEY don't even know how they picked Alcoholics Anonymous. The old timers remember that the Big Book was being written at about the time a book or movie called Captains Courageous came out and that MIGHT have lead them to the title.

Before that, the big book was going to be called "One Hundred Men" or maybe it was "One Hundred Men and a Woman."

No, i am not trying to make a joke.

Because they will never divulge your name or the fact that you attend meetings to anyone else, because whatever is said in the meetings is never to be repeated outside of a meeting, because you dont use last names, and because you dont have to give your name or any name for that matter if you dont want to!!

You only tell your first name and it doesn't necessarily need to be your real name, just a way for others to address you. Also, whatever you hear, see or speak goes no further than that meeting.

well, because that's a group. and people need to know you. but the thing is that after the meeting is over, everything that was talked about or disscussed should be left at that. that being private. that should be kept between the group only!

You just tell them your first name. That way you can be addressed in the meeting. What should they call you "hey you over there in the red shirt".
