It started along time ago. But it started by older people who were out in the sun. They didnt want to have the sun beating down on their necks and giving them a burn. So their collars protected them. From the seventies and now, kids do it to hid their hickies. They also do it because every other preppy person is doing it and it is necessary in their world to be 'trendy'. blah

Well, I was reading my uncle's GQ magazine, and the popping of the collar is to show if you are sex-crazed. Girls, DO NOT pop your collar.

There is no real purpose, or meaning. I guess the reason people to it is to look cool, or 'gangsta.' i've tried it a few times, but it looks geeky on me, and i don't think it is really cool.
