If you read programming on chess software, one of the ways of analysing the game is by means of a value-based weightage system and a depth search routine. The game helps players to develop skills in anticipating future consequences by weighing best outcomes in a variety of situations and to eventually pick the best course of action.

Think of the ripple effect. Chess is game to help with strategy thinking as well as cause and effect planning. If you do this move, what moves will open up later, what moves will be cut off, how will it force your opponent to react. Then for the next level, why did your opponent move they way they did, what are they planning, how can you counter it, are they trying to counter one of your strategies? It is not just you-move, they move. If it is you're not getting the full potential of the game.
This ability or way of thinking applies to everyday life. Usually though, people think strategy applies to things like war and fighting. But, isn't everything really a competition to do better?
