A floppy disk is a data storage device that is composed of a ring of thin, flexible (i.e. "floppy") magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic wallet. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD, the latter initialism not to be confused with "fixed disk drive", which is an old IBM term for a hard disk drive.

CD-ROM (an abbreviation of "Compact Disc Read-Only Memory") is a compact disc that contains data accessible by a computer. While the compact disc format was originally designed for music storage and playback, the format was later adapted to hold any form of binary data. CD-ROMs are popularly used to distribute computer software, including games and multimedia applications, though any data can be stored (up to the capacity limit of a disc). Some CDs hold both computer data and audio with the latter capable of being played on a CD player, whilst data (such as software or digital video) is only usable on a computer. These are called Enhanced CDs.

Although many people use lowercase letters in this acronym, proper presentation is in all capital letters with a hyphen between CD and ROM.

Floppy disks are the small swuare plastic disks and cd's are the round shiny ones. Floppys hold 1.44mb and most burnable cd's hold 720 mb roughly 500 times more than a floppy. Most new computers do not come with floppy drives anymore as cd burners are so prevelant

CD-ROMs and floppy disks are chalk and cheese, even though their primary function is storage.

Floppy disks are part of the older generation of storage media. They usually store 1.44 MiB of data and measure 3 1/2 inches. They store binary data in a magentic surface. They are outdated now with the advent of CDs and DVDs.

CD-ROMs are optical storage media, i.e:- the store binary data in microscopic 'pits' and 'lands' on their recording surface is read by light (LASER rays). CDs can typically store 700 MiB of data which is many times that of floppys. Also, they are much more faster and durable than floppies. Floppys can be read and have data written into them any number of times, but ordinary writable CDs (CD-Rs) can be written ('burned') only once, hence the name ROM (Read-Only Memory)attached to them. But CR-RW (rewritable disks) can be re-written many number of times.

Two major differences. Firstly, a floppy disk holds about a meg and a half (1.44 mb to be exact) whilst a CD holds around 600 mb.
Seconds, floppy's are WMRM (write many read many) devices (just like a hard drive) - meaning you can write data to them as often as you like. CDs are WORM (write once read many) meaning the data can only be written once.

There's a lot of differences. The way they store information is different ... the CDs us light, the disks use magnets. Capacity is much different ... CDs have 700 + MB, floppies (3.5 inch) only have 1.44 MB. CDs generally hold their data more reliably over time and wear a bit better in general.

CD-ROM = is data storage device that is "read-only" from the phrase itself you cant edit, write and erase the data stored in it unless you have a writing device. Generaly CDs have a higher storage capacity than floopy disk and uses lasers for writing and reading

FLOPPY DISK = is also a data storage device. In this type of device you can rewrite, edit, or erase existing data. Generaly floppy disks have smaller capacity than CDs and uses magnetic disk (black) the same with your cassette tapes.

please get a floppy disk and a CD ROM, look at them both. break the floopy disk and see whats inside, break the cd and look at it. If you can't tell after that, go to a professional and pay the person to tell you.

Floppy disks use magnetism to store data.
CD's have pits burned into them that a laser can read.
