First of all, you have a while to wait before you even have to think about induction. There are things you can do to try to help you do into labor naturally, that way you really won't have to worry about it at all. Here are a few for you to try.

Walking- more then a mile a day. We live in a neighborhood on a hill, so for me it was basically like hiking. Around our neighborhood is over a mile, and it helped bring the baby down and by the time I was induced, I was 5 cm, 80% effaced already.

Having sex- there are prostoglandins in semen that can trigger dialation and thinning of the cervix. Orgasm can also start contractions. So have some fun, unless you were told not to by your doctor.

Drink raspberry leaf tea- sometimes this works, sometimes not. But it's worth a try and tastes pretty good, so if nothing else, you get a nice flavored drink.

Try some acupressure- there are some spots that will help with labor. Between your thumb and first finger, in the webbing between the two fingers. Press and hold for 20-30 seconds and then release- you will know you have hit the right spot because it will be sore. Do this for 10-15 mins a day. There is also one on the back of your leg, between your calf and ankle, where the tendon attaches. You can feel an indentation on either side, about 2 fingers widths up from your ankle. Do the same for this one as the one on your hand.

Things I wouldn't do: caster oil- this can cause severe abdominal cramps that aren't contractions, make you have diarrhea and vomiting. Nipple stimulation- this can cause severe contractions that can't be controled and do nothing to help dialation and effacement, only make you miserable.

If you do end up being induced, it isn't that bad. I would almost rather take induction over natural. My natural labor was hard. My water broke at home and by the time I got to the hospital, my contractions were so bad I thought I was going to die. I finally got the epidural, and all was well after that.

With induction, I went in, they started pitocin and I got my epidural before the hard contractions kicked in. Then my doctor came in and broke my water. I really couldn't feel it because I was so numb. I always tell women to get the epidural if they are thinking of anything for pain management. It works the best and is pretty reliable.

It is nice to have your baby natually but I had my son by being induced because he was getting too big and I was having a lot of pain walking. It doesn't hurt at all. They just hook you up to an IV then you can choose to have an epidural if you want. I did when i was 5 cm, thats when I started to feel the actual pain contractions. My labor went pretty quickly being induced and I was only in labor 6 hours with 20 min of pushing but every labor is different. I liked being induced for the fact that I got a sleeping pill so I got to sleep the whole night before, I knew when I was going in so my bags were packed and ready and I knew what day my son was going to be born so I felt ready and not rushed. That made it nice.

I was induced with my daughter who is now 4 months old.
The contractions come on slow and increase as they increase the dosage of medication. I actually am glad I got induced. With my son, the contractions came on hard and strong right from the start. I had an epidural with him. I couldn't handle the pain. With my daughter they started out slow and then increased in pain so it was easier to handle. I didn't have any pain medication. Of course, I thought I was going to die at the very end because it hurt so bad but I am glad I did it without any help of med's. It was a very unique experience. I think if we do decide to have another baby, I will do it without medication. You really feel like you accomplished a great task which in fact you did by pushing out this baby.
I hope this has helped you some.
Good luck and congratulations on the new baby.

That is only one week after your due date. Is there a reason he wants to do the induction so soon? Most doctors will suggest induction if you go beyond your due date, but unless medically indicated- meaning if there is a problem- most will allow up to two weeks after. Personally I think it is best to let the process occur naturally, interfering only if there are problems that endanger either mom or baby. Inducing as a procedure only hurts as much as the IV, but the contractions are much more intense and painful. I started my labor naturally eleven days after my due date. My labor stalled after twenty some hours, and they broke my water. That wasn't effective enough, so I ended up getting pitocin IV. Yeah- it hurt before, but it REALLY hurt after! I managed to go twenty six hours in active labor with no pain meds, as it went against my belief system, but I don't blame any woman for getting drugs if they have to be induced. Key word being HAVE to....

I was induced with my daughter. In some ways yes it is more painful. The medication they will use to help soften your cervix needs to be applied directly to your cervix so that is just a little uncomfortable (but you are probably used to that kind of thing by this far into your pregnancy). Once that is done, and your cervix is ready to dialate, the pitocin they use to help get your contractions going is designed to make your contractions stronger and more efficient. So in that way it hurts more, and they start much stronger than natural labor which builds up to strong contractions. Get the epidural and you will be fine though. Good Luck!!!

I spent a total of 38 hours of being induced over 2 days and NOTHING! The nurses said I was having big contractions, but I couldn't feel a thing!

My wife had four children and had to be induced with all. She never complained of the procedure (which involved a IV and a pill on the cervix). Otherwise it was normal labor pain.
There are natural ways of labor induction that you can find on the net!

Both of my children were induced labors, and I was told that it is worse but with nothing else to compare it to, it didn't seem that bad. If you haven't had another one naturally without the induction I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck!

There is no additional pains or discomfort from being induced. The act of induction is done through an IV.... this will start contractions... then the standard pains start....with any delivery...
Good luck
