I want to take my children on a great summer vacation that they would be interested in and have fun as well as the adults. We have been to Gatlinburg, Cedar Point and Kings Island. Can't afford Disney at this time. I want to stay in the U.S. I would love your reccomendations.

SeaWorld, Legoland, Wild Animal Park, the Zoo...where exactly do you want to go? Like a specific state?? You can all go to Hawaii and have fun at the beach. Kids always like the water.

New York. It has the Museum of natural History, which is great for young and old. There is also the Empire State Building. There are many theme parks within driving distance in New Jersey and elsewhere (Six Flags). There is Central Park, Yankees and Mets baseball, Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Greenwich Village, Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, theaters (some for kids) and much, much more. There are even helicopter tours, which are not that expensive.

Despite the fact that new York is known for high hotel rates, you can find cheap rates. If you want to go even cheaper, stay at a hotel in New Jersey and take the PATH train into New york everyday.

For specific things for children only, see the source link below.

Go to Michigan or Colorado. Grand Haven, Michigan is great if you like beaches. The beach is right on Lake Michigan and there aren't a lot of sharks and large reptiles in the midwestern waters. Colorado would be fun too. In Denver there is this huge indoor aquarium. It has all sorts of Tropical fish, eels, mantas, and a lot of fun underwater creatures behind solid glass windows. There's Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The Royal Gorge. If you and your family like thrills, I would recommend the giant drop swing on the other side of the gorge from the entrance parking lot. The gorge walls themselves are at least 1,000 ft high and the swing drops 100 feet from above the gorge and actually swings out over the gorge. You are of course being suspended with up-to-date cabling. Go up to Mt. Evans. It's the one of the highest mountain peaks in the Rockies. Also, horseback riding is really fun, too. Go to a state park. In Des Moines, Iowa they have Adventure Land. Close to my howntown of Sioux City about a few miles outwards theres Okaboji. I suggest looking at stately web sites and see what fun events and celebrations they have this time of year.

When our 2 boys were about this age we took them to Washington, D.C., for a week. They absolutely loved it. There is so much to do and most all of it is free. We took them to the different Smithsonian things they would be interested in, they saw money being made, the zoo where they saw the Panda's. We went to the harbor in Baltimore one day and went to the National Aquarium with a rain forest on top, saw the old battleships, took a ferry across Chesapeake Bay, the kids really enjoyed everything. It is something different than going to theme parks. We really enjoyed it as well.

Would you consider visiting historical sites? I am thinking about Williamsburg. The "city" has costumed inhabitants who talk about life in colonial Virginia. There are venues children can join in. It's not only historical and educational, it's fun!

Another place (historical in nature) would be Washington, D.C. Many venues are free- like the Jefferson Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial and the Washington Monument.

The Smithsonian Museums have all sorts of interesting things to see. The Air and Space Museum has the Gemini Capusule!

Think about it, anyway!

No rides,no costumed cartoon characters- it's your history.

I just got back from a week in Branson, Missouri with three grandchildren...it was a blast, there is always something to do for the kids, a big waterpark, comedy shows, plus Silver Dollar City is a big amusement park about ten miles away. Be sure to ride the Ducks if you go. Good luck!!

If you don't want to do Disney there's still Universal and Sea World in Orlando. Universal is running deal where kids get in free so you might want to check that out.

If you want to stay away from Orlando then I recommend, Busch Garden in Tampa, FL or Williamsburg, VA. There's also the beaches of FL (Ft. Lauderdale, Clearwater, Daytona) and SC/NC (Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and the Outer Banks).

Disney is running alot of deals right now, so may be cheaper then u think. But other ideas are six flags or worlds of wonder. You could also call or email a travel agency and ask for ideas. Or go to expedia or a travel site liek that and look at family destinations.

Visit Utah! Park City has a aton of fun activities for kids including the world's longest and highest zip line (fun for adults too!), the Alpine Slide and other fun stuff in Olympic Park. We have Lagoon, a fun amusement and water park, the Delicate Arch and Moab down south, Temple Square visitor area, one of the nation's largest known Dinosaur Exhibits and much more!
