I've got a gateway select 750...I've upgraded the ram to 512mb from128mb, put in a crucial9600se 128mb video card...but the processor is only 750mhz. I want something as reliable as my gateway, but I don't want to spend more than 200-300. (I'm talking about used...we've got a hundred used shops here)

Build your own. It isn't that hard and you know what is going in the computer.

You can use your keyboard, mouse, speakers, and monitor over again. Unless you want new parts. But you will need Case, Motherboard (A.K.A. Main Board, System Board), Prosser, Ram, Hard Drive, Video Card, and Sound Card. This is just the basics. You can get much more in to the systems for more money. Some mother board will come with video and sound on them and they will be cheaper in price. I would not go this route. If one or both go out and all your slot are filled, your out of luck. Go with a full mother board.

Three things that you have to ask yourself when building a computer; What do you want it to do? How fast do you want it to go? How much you want to spend?

These are very important when building a computer. There are many sites to buy computer parts from and are great with service on the parts they sell.
www.mwave.com
www.newegg.com
www.pricewatch.com
www.geeks.com
www.tigerdirect.com
All these sites have parts galore. I would suggest start with the motherboard and prosser first, then to your memory, Hard drive, video card and then sound card. Everything else is just a way station.

If you plan on running graphics such as playing video games then don't bother buying anything newer until you have at least $800 to spend.

If you just want faster internet and email, word processor etc. then look for

at least
1 ghz processor
512 mb ram
800 front side bus speed
40 gig hard-drive
128 mb video card
cd rom

For 200-300 I would expect at least that with no monitor.
You can look here too www.pricewatch.com

Actually you can got to many sites and get used equipment or just upgrade your own for a few hundred.
Places like newegg.com and tigerdirect.com will sare barebones kits for a few hundred and you can move the existing components from one machine to another
Can also choose your own stuff and just upgrade the essentials. Like motherboard processor and ram. If you choose to do your own remember to include a new case as well and powersupply to support the new motherboard and processor. I upgraded my old 800 machine to a 3.2 ghz processor this way and cost was less than 400 and got all new parts to boot

Also try retrobox.com they sell off lease corporate computers, usually for a good price, example:

IBM P4 1.8 512MB/40GIG HD/ DVD for $180

Otherwise if you find something in your area, say at least P4/Athlon XP with 512 MB ram you should be good

I'm betting you have a PIII system. Go to ebay and spend $30, and buy a 1300MHz CPU or 1000MHz CPU. You will notice a huge difference, for only $30.
