A Logical answer is that they LOVE you and want only the best for you. I don't think they are going to gain anything by keeping shackled in the dungeon, Cinderella. Unless, they work you 24/7, with just a few hour to sleep in between serving them.
If you don't know your parents, do you think a bunch of people would! You are an adult, set with them, and explain to them your side. As you stated you are 21, and can do anything you want, but to them, your loving parents, you will always be their baby.
Be Happy that you have someone who LOVES you so much. From your words that is what I got.

They are probably worried that he will not be able to support you because they care about you and are worried about your well being. Hopefully they will never "get over" caring about you. Try to always highlight your boyfriends positive qualities whenever you talk to them. Let them know how well he treats you and that his job doesn't affect his ability to treat you well.

Well either they are possessive asses who want to control every aspect of your life or MAYBE, just maybe they love you and genuinely want what they believe is the best for you. JMHO

maybe they just have higher expectations for you!...parents often want to relive there own life though there kids!... don't fight them on it but if its want you want to do then you do it....your parents will always love you no matter what and will be there if things don't work out..just expect the 'well we told you so' speech!!
