I have had the same prescription since high school. I would like to upgrade my glasses to newer frames. Everytime I go to LensCrafters to change my lenses/frames, they say I would need to get a check up every 2 years or I cannot purchase new frames/lenses. In LensCrafters computer system, they have a record of my prescription. Why do I still need to get a doctor's appointment to obtain the same prescription to purchase new lense/frames? Any ideas????

Because even though you have had the same prescription for ten years as you get older your eyesight does change. So you want to try and maintain good "eye" health. I would suggest about every two years to make sure you see the eye doctor. Because if you keep wearing the same prescription and there is a dramatic change with your eyesight...wearing the same eyeglasses can actually damage your eyes even more.

They probably want to check you out just because your eyes COULD change, and then you would need a new prescription. Also, I'm not sure if this goes for glasses also, and I don't know what state you live in, but in Texas, if you wear contacts (like I do) then you are required by law to get an eye exam every year if you want to get your contact prescription refilled. I think this may be a fairly new thing (like the last 5 years or so). I tried to get around this little problem by ordering my contacts from 1800contacts, but they have to have a prescription from your eye doc before they can give you any and your prescription expires in a year and then you have to go get another exam. This kinda sucks because it costs about $100 and my insurance doesn't cover eye exams unless you have an acutal medical problem. (Being myopic doesn't count, but cataracts do, so my mom doesn't have to pay for her exam even though it is mainly to get new contacts because she is also myopic, and has nothing to do with her cataracts, which are mild.) Anyways, I would ask them about laws regarding that kind of thing.

Eye health is not just your prescription. It is also if you are developing any serious eye disorders, double vision (which can happen from just wearing glasses) to glaucoma. It is important to have your vision checked on at least a every other year schedule and if you have eye problems in your family more often than that. I have my eyes checked on a yearly basis if I need new glasses or not.

You never know when the eyes can change. You want to keep your eyes healthy. Just because we have a physical check up and all is well doesn't mean we don't ever have to go back. Glaucoma, just to name one disease can cause damage to the eye.

Because your checkup also looks for other eye diseases.
