No contraceptive is 100% effective. However, there are several simple mistakes that people make in taking the pill that can make it less effective. If taken correctly, the pill is very effective at preventing pregnancy. Here are some things to remember when taking the pill:
- Be sure to take a pill every day, as close to the same time every day as possible. When you miss pills, your chance of pregnancy increases. Even if you don't have sex on a particular day, you still have to take the pill that day.
- Be sure to take the pills in the proper order. Your pill packet should have instructions on it, or ask your doctor or pharmacist to show you the correct order in which to take them.
- Some herbs and drugs interact with the pill and can make it less effective. Antibiotics, for example, can decrease the effectiveness of the pill. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications or supplements you take to make sure they don't interact with the pill.
- If you have vomiting or diarrhea, the pill may not stay in your body long enough to release enough hormones to work properly, reducing its effectiveness.
- Any time you are worried about the pill's effectiveness, such as when you take antibiotics, use backup contraception (e.g. a condom, the sponge, etc.). You can also use barrier methods along with the pill for added protection.
- The pill does not protect against STDs. Use a condom if you need STD protection.

Oral contraception is over 97% effective when used correctly. That means you need to take it every day at close to the same time. On a personal note, I have been on the Pill (a couple of different kinds) for the last nine years, since I was 18, and never even had a pregnancy scare. From time to time I took it at different times of day (when traveling abroad) or forgot a pill and had to take two the next day. It is very reliable and safe, as long as you don't smoke. I would recommend oral contraception to anyone in a monogamous relationship who can remember to take pills.

I am walking proof that birth control is not 100% effective. I had been on birth control for 2 years when I got pregnant with my son. If you previously had a period on your pills and now you're not having a period, I would suggest taking a pregnancy test. If that does not alleviate your concern, see your doctor for a test.
