Excessive water intake is called psychogenic diabetes insipidis. The only real problem is you will have to pee a whole lot, and you could make your blood hypotonic or even cause dumping syndrome in your intestines.

Yes, you can "overdose" on water. But it takes a lot, and is hard to do if your kidneys are working well. The amount would vary depending on a lot of factors, but would be on the order of 2-3 gallons (8-12 liters) in a couple of hours.

PS. The advice to drink 8 glasses a day? That's BS. Don't bother.

You can't drink too much water unless you really try. The only side effect of drinking lots of water is having to go to the bathroom often. I drank a gallon in an hour one time, just before a drug test, and it just made me have to pee every 5 minutes, and when I DID pee, it was crystal clear, and I passed the test, even though I had smoked pot the day before.

Interesting question. It has been estimated that a healthy adult on a normal diet will become "water intoxicated" if they were to consume about 3 litres of water in one sitting. For those who are on a "low-sodium" diet (high blood pressure patients, for example), this volume can be considerably smaller (1.8 litres approx.).

Long-distnace runners, diabetics, Ecstasy abusers and people with certain mental disorders are especially at risk for water intoxication. The technical term for the condition, by the way, is HYPERHYDRATION.

Im not sure the exact amounts, Im sure it varies between people, but you can actually kill yourself by drinking too much water.

The water dilutes the amount of sodium in your blood stream and cells, which is the main conductor for the electric shock that makes your heart beat. When you have too much water, that current stops, and you have a heart attack, not to mention other problems in your brain (synopsis also partly relies on salutatory conduction).

You are supposed to have 8 glasses of water a day. If you drink too much, you will begin vomiting later on. You get really bad headaches, and you just feel awful!!!!

Osmosis can cause cells to burst, so it isn't great. But I'm not sure how much an overdose is.
