To properly attend to the problem, the animals, house, and yard have to be treated as a whole.
This is an excellent article I think you should read.

Good grief! The answers are all over the place! Go to a pool store, or large feed store, and buy a couple bags of Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Dust around the house with it. You can also dust the dogs and inside the house as well. It is perfectly safe to use on the animals. If you dust the house, though, it looks like someone has been playing in the flour! Leave it overnight and vacuum up the next day. You don't have to reapply if it rains. It kills fleas, ticks, and fire ants. Plus a few more critters as well. Safe for kids and the environment. Cheap as well. I've got 25 acres and I use it all the time. Put it on the garden, in the yard, or if I see a new fire ant mound. It works.

Fleas in the yard is a lost cause. Try to control them in the house and on the animals instead - use something on the carpets and put Advantage or something like that on the animals.

Dont qoute me on this, but there are alot of home remedies online that are natural and wont harm the plants or grass, 1 acre is alot, fleas hate citrus, my only guess would be to invest in large quantities of orange or lemons, buy some special industrial size or agricultural machine to distribute the contents evenly. There should be heaps of remedies online, if you are desperate enough they would probably be of some use.

Suspend a light bulb over a pan of oil or soapy water to attract and drown fleas during the night.

The following site: http://www.diyhappy.com/quick-and-dirty-mosquito-trap/ has a tutorial for making a mosquito trap. Maybe it would work for fleas too.
