There are still millions of Mayan people living in Guatemala and Mexico. It's a myth that they "vanished"--they did leave their great cities and go back to living in small villages, probably due to a combination of warfare, drought and over-farming--but they aren't extinct. In fact there's probably more alive now then at the peak of their "classic" civilization. Many of them still live by their ancient calendar and follow many of the old ways.

Mayan civilization was based on a staple crop. As the climate changed, the crop yield diminished and the surplus production that supported their impressive material culture fell apart. At some point, they became easy prey for other cultures willing to conquer and exploit them. You need to fill in the details, but that is the story.

There are several variant theories on what transpired with these people and their culture. The foremost probability lays in the one that says their system was based so heavily into a single variety of crops when the draughts of the era and soil depletion combined crop failures and starvation deassembled the social structure quite rapidly....Another theory says that the leadership had become so decadant and unwieldy that the lack of common sense authority rapidly lost the respect of the "military " wing of their culture and the lack of strong policing rapidly spread to a falling away of the peoples' support and it rapidly fell apart from there with groups banding together in 'clans' to make their own way in the world---

It is still around. It faded away just like the roman, greek and others before them. All we have left is remnants of what we consider great because of certain achievements but I am fairly sure that either religion, ignorance on the part of the general population and greed brought it to where it is now. Today it is hidden from most people because of the same reasons, religion, ignorance and greed.
