The founding fathers had strong beliefs in God, and although they recognized the importance of not allowing religion a part in the laws so as to keep the church from influencing them, they also recognized that this spirituality was important to the people. At the time, there were not as many religions recognized in society as there are now, so it was not unseemly to mention God as long as the purpose was to "bless" something and not influence it. This is as mush as I know, which may be little, but it's a start.
One thing I would say is if people would stop arguing over who is right or wrong and pay attention to how they themselves are behaving while respecting others, we would not have many of these problems people keep talking about. If you respect a person's right to choose gay marriage, (which many believe being gay is not a choice) that takes away it's connotation of being bad and makes it a choice you may not like and may never choose, but it would still be a personal choice and hence not something you have to choose. I choose not to believe many things, but I don't believe that makes those things bad or illegal.
And that all goes back to respecting each other's right to practice their beliefs, as some do believe gay marriage is ok while others don't, based solely on religion (what science do you have to back up the claim that gay marriage is bad?)

It is because times are slowly changing so that our government is not just about christianity anymore. We have amendments for the changing times since the US is made up of a lot more than Christianity and we are now making a stronger point to separate the "Church" from the State.

Our Founding Fathers referred to God as according to their best knowledge and belief it was He from Whom everything flowed. But science has belied even the Story of Creation(though some are endeavouring futilely to counter it) .The stigma attached to gay behaviour because accordng to the beliefs then prevailing copulation was meant solely for procreation and ipso facto it was allowable only between opposite sexes.Being gay was perhaps considered as defiance of this provision of the Almighty. However, surely we are now more mature to appreciate that in some cases the urge is as natural as the attraction for the opposite sex. In fact, evenduring biblical times gay people existed but allways went in fear of the dogma.Again even 'nomal copulation was countenanced only if it was indulged in for procreation. Coitus interruptus was considered a sin.The joy of having sex for itself was considered to be a sin. If a couple failed to produce an offspring even the couple itself felt that they were committing a sin if they slept together even if they were married couples. We now know and on account of population pressures we have to have recourse to artificial practices for preventing pregnancy. In short with growing knowledge the things are fallin in place. Now we know that perhas gays cannot help being gay. May be thery gayness has been forced upon them due to social and family circumstances. To understand is to forgive
Our Founding Fathers were right in their own place. However, if were to obstinately stick up to the time-worn dogma we shall not only be insultin them but insulting ourselves. The States were not far too wrong in countenancing same sex marrage. You say that most of the States, not all, begin their constitution with this invocation of God. In case of others the uestion does not arise..

antidisenstablishmentarianism-that's why.
stop using god as a reason to hate. there is nothing worse then self righteousness. god's blessing should not be asked for by the government. you know, that little ideal called separation of church and state. this is a democracy not a theocracy

I think people are confusing religion with basic human rights. God doesn't bless alot of things, hate for one another, violence, lying, glutony, envy, the list just goes on & on. but i dont see people gettin all up in an uproar about all the liars in this world, so why should it matter who im sleeping with?

God will NOT bless anything he has forbidden. That's why our nation is in such jeopardy. Our nation is no longer as our founding fathers planned...."One Nation, Under God."

People change. Have you ever noticed that the leaders of the country usually strong believers in one religion. That's because they're opinions might be biast. The democrats of today aren't as god-fearing as those in the past

Your tradition is talking above your ability to rationalize and accept that we are in the future, and above all sense of organized religion.
Your narrow definition of "God" does nothing for anyone but yourself. Once you make rules for others in a completely removed situation that does absolutely nothing for your own situation but make you a little bit uncomfortbale, you have infringed on that person's freedom to "pursue happiness", which is what our founding fathers ultimately had in mind.
That preamble is a tradition, and nothing more. Update yourself.

Actually, only Massachussettes allows gay marriage, and they're working to ammend their constitution so as to disallow it. I agree with you though, we need to be one nation under God again. We need to allow prayer in school and the posting of the Ten Commandments in public.
