the smartest man in the world in my opinion would be Kim Peek! The reason why is because;
Each of Kim’s eyes can read a separate page simultaneously, absorbing every word. He can read a page in 10 seconds and never forget it. Normal reading time per page would be three minutes.
Kim is an expert in at least 15 different subjects, including history, geography and sport. He has the ability to memorise telephone directories in double- quick time.
Nobody in the world is thought to possess a brain as extraordinary as his. He can recall facts from about 10,000 different books.
Kim Peek was born in 1951 and he was different from the start. His head was one-third larger than normal. In 1983 he had his first brain scan which showed that he had one solid brain hemisphere instead of the usual two.
One theory mentioned is that instead of having two sides of the brain competing with each other, you have one mega computer.

With all due respect to the other answers, it is absurd to claim that Stephen Hawking is, as one person stated, the most brilliant scientist of all time. He might--might--be the smartest scientist of his day. He is probably the smartest physicist of our generation. But the smartest scientist of all time? Statements like this display a total lack of understanding of the history of science. What about Euler, a mathematician who could correctly calculate sums to the 50th decimal place in his head, and wrote more mathematical works after going fully blind than any other man in history? What about Newton, the father of modern physics, who invented the calculus in order to solve physics problems? Or perhaps one of the Bernoullis, the royal family of the scientific revolution? Maybe Einstein, who overturned the fields of physics and astronomy, and upon whose work all of Hawking's advances are based? Certainly Hawking is a brilliant man, far more brilliant than most of us can comprehend. And though his success despite impairment is admirable, it does not imply higher intelligence--that is, Bill Gates would not be any smarter than he currently is if he had been in a wheelchair his entire life.
It is impossible to quantify intelligence (the IQ test is nothing but a rough estimate), so it is impossible to identify the smartest man in the world. Maybe it is Hawking, or Gates--who knows? But what I can say for certain is that Hawking is not the most brilliant scientist of all time--that is a preposterous statement.

I have to go with the majority on this one and say Stephen Hawkings. Not only is he most likely the most briliant scientist EVER, but he invented the very computer that allows him to be able to speak. I almost wonder if his handicapp is BECAUSE of his intelligence. Perhaps the mind is so strong that it has paralyzed his body. (Any X-Men comic book fans will know where I got that theory)
