If you mean people from China studying in the US, then you have to realize there is a selection bias. Only the smartest people in China are allowed to come to the States to study.
You see the same selection bias with East Indians. Most people from India whom I have met in the US are well educated. However, if you go to the UK where the selection bias does not exist because India was once part of the Commonwealth, you see Indians in a lot of menial labor jobs as well as in jobs that require more education.
If you mean Chinese Americans, then it may well be genetics. Their parents were allowed to come to the US -- so you have that same selection bias I mentioned -- and smart people tend to have smart children.
There may be some cultural things going on as well. Certain cultures (not just the Chinese) value education more than others. Therefore they tend to get better grades on average because there is positive reinforcement.

Ok I'm an Education major well an Elementary Education major to be exact and there are a few reason the one I believe most is this. The Chinese and most Asians in general empasize the emportance of being part of a group and not letting the group down as a result when a child does poorly they have let down thier family and at times thier peers as well. Also in China they start children on more complicated academic work sooner, mostly in areas such as math. Or that is at least what my textbooks say.

It's just culture. In any country where there is a huge pressure regarding academic performance (not just China), you're going to get smart kids like that. Even if the child has never been to China, they probably have parents who were raised in such a society and these parents pressure them into doing well in school.

They are born with a desire to work harder than most people due to the fact that in China one of the most important things in life is to have a great education. When Chinese people come to America they are given the oppurtunity to reach their fullest academic potential. Something that, in China, is only given to those who can afford it.

I don't know about China, but I know people assume Japanese people are all geniouses because of how rigid their schooling is. I did exchange there a couple years ago and we went to school from 7 am to 4 pm for 240 days of the year.

they are not born smarter. They just try harder, and they have a LOT of pressure from society. Also, schools in China are much tougher than they are here.

of course no one was a genius, but I think it may have something to do with a traditional and cultural form of discipline. Then, the parallel is clear.
