no... ostriches get to be really big, plus they aren't very nice.

Ostriches are not extremely social birds. Most live alone, and those that do travel in packs are not very cohesive.

The ostrich is a large, flightless bird. It is, in fact, the largest living bird on earth. When full grown, the bird weighs over 250 pounds and stands 98 inches tall. The male ostriches have soft black feathers on its back with white primary feathers on its wings and tail, making him easy to spot. Females and all young ostriches have brownish feathers instead of black to help camouflage them. Both males and females have bare necks and thighs. This skin is blue or pink in males and pinkish gray in females. They both have long, mobile necks, small heads, large eyes, long, powerful legs, and two toes on each foot. Their voice is either a loud hiss or a booming roar.

No. Absolutely not.
I think you better check with your local county codes first. In some areas ostrich is considered a farm animal and is not allowed to be in a residential area.

Ostrich are not trainable like a dog or cat, as to where they go to the bathroom.
Ostrich have the ability to kick from the side when they feel threatened and can hurt people.
Ostrich also spit at people if people get to close to the ostrich.

I would wait until the child is at least 16 and can learn how to take care of the animal as well as control the animal, provided you have the proper permits to own such an animal.

No not at all. Those things get huge and are very mean.
Well I guess if you wanted to let the child be killed sure. But what the hell were you smoking when you thought that a ostrich would be a good household pet?

Sure if you have a big fenced back yard and local ordinances allow it. Since an ostrich could easily kill your 9 yo with a single kick I'd recommend a puppy or kitten instead though. Maybe a goldfish.

An ostrich is a huge responsibility. It takes about three years for an ostrich to reach adulthood. Please read Ostrich Encyclopedia before you buy an ostrich. I would hate for you to buy an ostrich and then have to get rid of it. People now a days buy exotic animals cause its cool and then turn them loose or send them packing to the SPCA.

As her parent you are the only one that decide if its alright, personally I think that is a bit extreme and would NEVER allow an ostrich as a pet in my home, but to each their own. Happy birthday to your little girl though and good luck with that decision.......(fish, dogs, cats, etc. all make nice pets too)!!!!!

No, absolutely not. Ostrich's are very powerful and use there legs to kick. A 9 year old can be greatly injured if the ostrich were to kick her.

Only if you have a big house and don't mind a lot of bird @^*$ on the carpet.

Ostriches live in the wild or on farms....... they are not "house pets."

If you have acres and acres of grazing land that can be fenced off from all other farm animals---maybe. Ostriches are fighting birds---they get angry and they can be extremely dangerous. I would not allow the 9-year old to enter the pen---but, she could look at it while you take care of it.
