Excellent field but it is much wider than most people imagine. You can go the infrastructure route; switches, routers, addressing-think CISCO. You can study Microsoft, various UNIX varieties (Linux, Solaris, SCO).
It takes a lot of study and a desire to constantly upgrade and grow. You can never sit on your laurels.
I started in the field about 8 years ago. I am not a youngster...Dropped in pay initially to the low 40's..Hit 80's last year. Good luck----Study IPv6.

I've been a network admin for over 10 years and I love it. The challenges are great (always learning) and the pay is decent (I'm in Canada and make mid 60's). Even at entry level, I made a decent living. Don't expect 9-5 however. Many admins I know (including myself) work days, but also have upgrades, MTCE etc. that are always done after hours or remotely.
