I don't know where I'd put it until fall if I bought it used. Any ideas?

Most people either continue to use it or throw it out.
Dorm furniture is usually Junk.

Look at yard sales for used furniture. It wouldn't have to be dorm specific, just small.

Dorm life is all about finding multi-use & small things.

I know some people who have sold dorm furniture, but a lot of people take it with them to their new apartment or whatever. I would check local classified ads and things like that. Also, goodwill stores will usually have cool retro furniture for very little money.

As for storage, you could always rent a storage unit or find a friend with an empty garage. The person you buy from may be willing to let you keep the furniture there until you're ready to use it.

Good luck!

It depends. Sometimes people keep the furniture they bought for the dorms if they are going to move into an apartment next. Other times they do sell their furniture if they don't want it any longer like microwaves and things of that nature. Check out garage sales in college towns or even where you live there is bound to be some stuff there.

At my college, most of the furniture was owned by the school. So, the other stuff we had was couches/futons, tables, lamps, and other things we wanted to keep. Sometimes people gave things like couches away before they moved out, or sold them (all on campus). I know that there are some colleges that don't provide everything, though. Check with the school you're going to if you have to buy things; they may be able to put you in touch with people selling it off or something. We had an online bulletin board system with a classifieds section. I would also check places like eBay, Craigslist, the newspaper, etc. If you don't have the storage space for it over the summer, check with people you know. Otherwise, you'll probably have to pay for storage to keep it over the summer.

Firstly, if you are going to be living in a dorm, chances are that the room's furniture will be sparse yet belonging to the school; therefore, don't worry about buying dorm furniture until you move into an apartment. Then, oh yes, buy it used. Find a place to store it - the parents' garage, a friend's house, storage units, etc.

There are storage lockers that are small, and don't cost too much. If some of the students are going to get an apartment in the area of the school - they actually might bring some of their dorm furniture with them, to use until they can buy better things. Check out the school paper and ads--see what's for sale. Can you bring it home with you for the summer if you find any used stuff?

A few important questions: What is your intended major, for instance art school is very different from law school. And are you trying to save money, or do you want the best? I'll start by saying, regardless, you MUST GET LOCKS. It doesn't matter how rural your school is, people steal things just for fun. Lock anything important to you. They sell computer and appliance locks for instance which fit into a standard sized hole on your computer. The game here is to bring as little as possible. You will have little space in a dorm, and undoubtedly you will buy things as you go. Most people make the mistake of bringing too much rather than too little.

Most dorm rooms come furnished with your bed, desk, and dresser. You are usually responsible for bringing a refrigerator, microwave, tv, etc. Some schools do offer storage facilities while others make it your responsibility to find a place for your stuff. What I would recommend is either bring all your stuff home with you at the end of each year or find a storage facility near your school to store your stuff. Some storage places will offer a student discount or you can see if a couple friends need to store stuff and split the cost.

Generally, the university owns most dorm room furniture. So when you arrive in the fall, if you move into university housing, a bed, desk and closet should already be provided. Contact your university housing office for more information.

Best of luck.

I know when I was in college the last few weeks of school many kids were trying to sell their lofts and other furniture. Many students posted fliers in the dorms, apartment or an ad in the campus paper.
